What are load cells?

what are load cells

A load cell is a type of sensor or transducer that converts mechanical force, such as weight, pressure or tension, into an electrical signal that can be measured and analysed. It’s a highly precise transducer that ensures accurate weight measurement and force monitoring.

Load cells are used in a variety of industries to help keep operations accurate, reliable and safe. In this article, we’ll take a look at how they work, the different types that are available and their use cases and applications.

How do load cells work?

When weight is applied to a load cell, the cell deforms slightly. These small changes are impossible to see with the naked eye but can be detected by strain gauges and are then translated into measurable data. These insights are shown on the load cell display or can be integrated into broader monitoring systems.

The reliability of load cell measurements depends on the build quality and material composition of the load cell and the accuracy of the strain gauges used in the process. High-quality load cells, such as the ones supplied by Crane Electronics, ensure precise measurements even in challenging and demanding environments.

What are the different types of load cells?

There are many different types of load cells available with some better suited to specific applications. Some of the most common types include:

    • Pancake Load Cells: also known as a universal load cell, pancake load cells are designed to measure compression, tension, or both in a compact, flat and circular form factor. They are robust, durable and come in a disc shape, making them ideal for applications where space is limited. They provide high accuracy, while their threaded mounting holes allow for secure attachment in various setups.

    • S Beam Load Cells: These are an ‘S’ shape and are typically used for measuring compression and tension forces. The compact design of S beam load cells and their precision make them ideal for various applications such as force testing and automation systems. They are easy to install and use, making them a popular choice with engineers.

    • Donut Load Cells: This type of load cell gets its name from its shape. It features a hole in the middle, which makes it look like a donut. They are also known as through-hole load cells. This design feature enables bolts, cables and shafts to pass through the central hole to accurately measure compressive forces in bolt tension monitoring and aerospace applications.

    • Compression Load Cells: These are often used in industrial weighing platforms, material testing and automation. The robust construction of compression load cells makes them perfect for ensuring accurate performance under heavy loads.

    • Tension Load Cells: As the name suggests, tension load cells are used to measure tension or pulling forces rather than compressive force. Tension load cells are commonly used in crane scales and load-lifting applications. They are highly durable, making them well-suited for extreme working conditions.

  • Shear Beam and Bending Load Cells: Known for their precision, shear beam and bending load cells are often used in industrial scales, conveyor belt systems and structural analysis. They are capable of managing substantial loads and are trusted by engineers who are looking for stability from their load cells.

What are load cells used for?

Load cells are used in a wide range of industries to ensure the accuracy and reliability of weight and force measurements. Some examples of industries and their applications include:

Manufacturing and automation
Load cells are commonly used in automated production lines to help monitor force levels during manufacturing and assembly processes. Using them can help ensure consistent product quality and prevent machines from becoming damaged. Load cells can not only improve quality but can also improve efficiency.

Aerospace and automotive
Engineers rely on load cells for testing in the aerospace and automotive industries to measure stress and load distribution in components. Doing so can help improve safety and performance and help mitigate the risks of component failure. For example, they can be used in crash testing to determine crucial data on impact forces.

Construction and structural monitoring
The insights gained from load cells in construction and structural monitoring can help engineers ensure the structural integrity of buildings, bridges and other large-scale infrastructure. This helps improve safety and reliability in these industries.

Why are load cell displays important?

Load cell displays convert the electrical signals into clear numerical values that provide actionable insights. In order for a load cell to be effective, it must be easy to interpret the findings, and this is where load cell displays become invaluable.

Modern load cells can even provide digital readouts and come with data logging and wireless connectivity capabilities. This helps improve the reliability and traceability of data to ensure compliance with strict industry standards and safety regulations. These advanced features can also make load cells easy to integrate with industrial systems.

Factors when choosing the right load cell

At Crane Electronics, we offer a wide range of load cells. Our product offering includes S beam load cells, pancake load cells and donut load cells as well as a wide range of load cells from Lorenz Messtechnik GmbH. When it comes to choosing the right load cell for your requirements, there are several things to consider, including:

  • Determining the load capacity that is required. For this, you’ll need to know the maximum weight and force you need to measure to ensure your chosen load cell can meet the demands.
  • Think about the environmental conditions. Some load cells are better suited to harsh environments, such as extreme temperatures, moisture and corrosive elements. Knowing where your load cell will be used will help you choose the right one.
  • Consider any mounting or installation requirements you may have to ensure it can fit smoothly into your system.
  • If you need a load cell for aerospace applications or other industries that require high-precision readings then make sure the type you choose can offer this accuracy and reliability.
