Crane Electronics Provides Long-Term Torque Testing For Cosworth Technologies

March 2003
Cosworth Technology, a major supplier of integrated powertrain solutions to the global automotive industry, has relied on Crane Electronics Torque Testing Equipment for the past 10 years. TorqueStars and CheckStars provide accurate and consistent performance at its Engineering UK operation based in Northampton.

The assembly activity where the Crane equipment is employed has developed a vast range of experience with low-volume engine programmes. Cosworth Technology is currently engaged in the machining and assembly of V12 engines for the prestigious Aston Martin DB7 and Vanquish models, with engines being completely stripped down after test using the Crane equipment to ascertain that the correct tightening torque has been applied to all engine bolts.

Three Crane CheckStar rotary transducers are used by the company to measure the torque applied by air tools and hand tools to the M6, M8, M10 and M12 fasteners used throughout the engines.

A Crane TorqueStar takes readings from the transducers, with results being both shown on the large digital display as well as being able to be downloaded to a PC using Crane’s PC Comms software, and printed out as required.
